Voters reject eliminating redistricting commission

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) — Californians have rejected a proposal to abolish a commission tasked with redrawing the state's legislative districts, while approving an expansion of the panel's role to redefine the state's congressional districts.

With 22 percent of precincts reporting, Proposition 27, which sought to eliminate the commission, was defeated Tuesday with 60.6 percent of the vote.

Its opposing measure was approved.

Proposition 20 puts the commission in charge of drawing congressional district boundaries. With 23 percent of precincts reporting, 64.6 percent of voters approved the measure

In 2008, Californians voted to create a 14-member panel to handle state Senate, Assembly and Board of Equalization district boundaries — a job previously held by the state Legislature.
