Election 2010: School Board

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Scott Barnett held a marginal lead Wednesday against five-term incumbent John De Beck for the San Diego Unified School District's District C school board seat.

Barnett is a former executive director of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association and is now a consultant.

In the second race for a seat on the SDUSD's Board of Education, math teacher Kevin Beiser led with 56.6 percent of the vote to businessman Steve Rosen's 43.4 percent in District B, with nearly half of the precincts counted.

Beiser was endorsed by the San Diego Education Association

However, it was unclear how many votes incumbent Katherine Nakamura got as a write-in candidate.

Nakamura came in third in the primary election, but a judge ruled that she was eligible to try to reclaim her seat as a write-in candidate.

According to the Registrar of Voters, only 466 write-in votes had been tallied soon after the polls closed.

The winners will take seats on a board grappling with a fifth straight year of spending reductions. The budget shortfall in the 2011-12 fiscal year, for which planning already is under way, is estimated to be $141 million.

School officials had hoped to shrink the gap with a $50 million infusion of cash from a parcel tax through Proposition J, but the measure did not secure the two-thirds approval it needed to pass.
