A sign of the times

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - If you're experiencing a bit of a post-election hangover, you're not alone. It was a long, emotional night for American political spectators and now a new era begins. Still, it's going to be a while before those campaign signs are removed. Larry Himmel thinks he has a solution to the poster problem.

From the San Ysidro border to the Jersey Shore, there is no reality TV show or Pay-Per-View "Wrestlemania" event that matches American politics for high-anxiety drama and dirty tricks.

And although in this morning-after election haze, you'll find a couple of bloody noses, a few bruised egos and a fair share of burnt bridges, the majority of American voters are usually more than willing to put their difference aside and move on for the good of the country.

I will not miss those polarizing political ads on TV. Now the only painful reminder of our democratic differences and opposing points of view are the proliferation of posters that now become the litter of our landscape.

Depending upon your bailiwick, campaign posters are supposed to be removed within a week or two following an election. But the truth is, some of this clutter will hand around long after our newly-elected officials find their approval level slipping below the Mendoza line, sticking in the ground much like our economy. Yesterday's solution becomes today's eyesore.

They are scattered around Scripps Ranch, cluttered throughout Carlsbad, plastered all over Poway. No ZIP code is immune.

I think I have a solution. Let's not declare a final tally until a week after the election and then deduct one vote for every poster of a candidate or proposition still standing in our neighborhoods. That will clear this up really quickly.
