Lucha Libre: Wrestling with lunch

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - At the foot of Washington Street, you'll find a phenomenon.

"In the short amount of time that we have been in business, we have created a little stir in San Diego," Jose Luis Rajano said.

Lucha Libre taco shop has created the kind of buzz that has the faithful lining up outside even before they open their doors. Some come for the food, others for the atmosphere. Most are here for a combo platter of high camp and hearty cuisine.

"My brothers and I decided we were going to do a restaurant, we really wanted to make something a little bit different," Jose said. "We wanted to make it a little fun. We wanted to be able to do pink walls and blue and zebra-print chairs."

And the walls of Lucha Libre are filled with the images and trappings of Mexican professional wrestlers.

"It's part of the Mexican culture. We love it. We're kind of a fast, casual type of place. You go to the counter, we call your name on the cool mike," Jose said.

If you wanted to be treated like a world title holder, all you've got to do is reserve the Champions Booth.

"The Champions Booth, you have to call 24 hours in advance to reserve. It's a maximum of four people and you get full service to the table," Jose explained. "Even though you're at a taco shop you could still have a nice, romantic dinner at the corner booth surrounded by the ropes."

More than just attitude and atmosphere, Lucha Libre features fresh, tasty and affordably authentic Mexican food.

"What we decided to do was to really incorporate better ingredients into our menu. What we really wanted to be able to do is provide a better quality burrito at a reasonable price," Jose said.

That's what lines them up, packs them in and brings them back.

"We had a nice little regular clientele that would come in for lunch. They told friends, who told friends, who told friends," Jose said.

When it comes to popularity, Lucha Libre holds San Diego's title belt for taco shops.
