Heroic U.S. Navy seal honored with plaque dedication

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - Hundreds of people gathered to honor a U.S. Navy seal who sacrificed his own life to save his fellow servicemen.

Petty Officer Second Class Michael Monsoor died in Iraq in 2006, when he threw himself on a grenade to shield others from the blast.

He died 30 minutes later.

A plaque was dedicated to Monsoor at the Mount Soledad Veteran's Memorial Saturday, and a dozen T-34 aircraft flew over to end the ceremony.

His family called it a fitting tribute.

Monsor's heroic actions earned him a medal of honor and military officials also say a future guided missile destroyer will be named after him.
