Foot massage wars

KEARNY MESA (CBS 8) - Larry Himmel enjoys traveling to neighborhoods all over San Diego in search of unique stories. This time he's hanging out in Kearny Mesa, investigating the foot massage wars.

For the past almost 32 years, I have earned my daily bread here at the KFMB Stations. We are proudly located in Kearny Mesa. It's a multi-colored, ethnic tapestry featuring authentic cuisine, mostly with an Asian lean across Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and down Convoy.

But there's a revolution afoot in this ZIP code -- one that literally starts at the ground up. Let's tip toe to the front lines of the foot massage war.

The happiest peds on the planet can be found on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and up and down Convoy. Storefront foot massage parlors are popping up everywhere, sometimes two to a strip mall. Their neon lights beckon, their signs blowing in the autumn breeze.

Their windows promise relief from a wide array of ailments, and a new foot massage business seems to pop up every day. Soon they'll be outnumbering the nail salons. And they all seem to be engaged in a price war, some offering an hour treatment for under $20. We found one for $16.95, which for a guy like me who has size 13 feet, is a real bargain.

All these foot massage salons seem to be jolly places, with names like Happy Foot and Happy Buddah. Who wouldn't be tickled about getting their footies soaked in hot water and gently stroked with aromatic creams for a solid 60 minutes? This is decadence at a discount price.

San Diego's job market may be lagging and the housing market sluggish, but here in Kearny Mesa we've got a glut of tootsie rubbers, and that's quite a feet.
