Historic ranch for sale

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A ranch just outside Santa Ysabel played a large part in San Diego's history, and now it could be part of your future because the property is for sale. Larry Himmel takes a tour.

In the rarefied air of Mesa Grande perched over Lake Henshaw, you'll find a 250-acre parcel of paradise at Shenandoah Ranch.

"It's in the sweet spot of San Diego's backcountry, and you have great access off county-maintained roads," Donn Bree said.

The ranch remains pristine.

"It started with a gentleman named Fred Scholder who was a German-born immigrant," Donn said.

The Shenandoah Ranch figured prominently in San Diego County history.

"Gold was discovered here at the Black Eagle Mine and the Shenandoah Mine," Donn said.

Fred Scholder and his wife Joaquina are buried on the property, but the ranch thrives. The centerpiece is a 3,000-square-foot Kendrick Kellogg-designed house.

"It kind of looks like a chart house, which is what he is famous for," Donn said.

The ranch house is sculpted out of wood, stone and hardware. The ranch overlooks the swimming hole and the barns, but the real views lie to the north and the east and seem to go on forever.

"You've got views unrivaled anywhere in the county," Donn said. "We are looking out over the Lake Henshaw Basin, which is two former Mexican land grants. Right above it is Hot Springs Mountain, which is the highest point in San Diego County at 6,533 feet."

Shenandoah Ranch is on the market. All this beautiful fresh air, the trees, the house, the 250 acres, the asking price: $4.5 million.

Shenandoah Ranch may not be paradise, but I'm fairly certain you can see it from here.
