Hundreds walk to support families with premature babies

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - More than a thousand San Diegans showed their support this morning for families of premature babies, at the second annual Miracle Babies 5K Family Run and Walk at Mission Bay Park.

The event raised an estimated $80,000 that will help families whose babies have to spend weeks, and sometimes months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Miracle Babies gives financial assistance to families who are struggling to pay hospital bills, transportation costs, and mortgage and rent payments.

With more than one in every ten babies born premature, organizers say, it's an important cause. Miracle Babies founder Dr. Sean Daneshmand said, "We want to let people know that pregnancies are not all easy. There are many people, many families in this country of ours that suffer. There are more than half-a-million deliveries prematurely in the U.S. annually."
