Knorr Candle Gift Shop: A bunch of beeswax

Posted: Updated:

DEL MAR (CBS 8) - In 1928, beekeeper Fred Knorr started making beeswax candles on his 20-acre farm in Del Mar.

"He told me that when he bought it, I think it was 1920, he paid $1,880 for the 20 acres," Steve Knorr said.

Today Steve Knorr, Fred's grandson, runs the shop that still handcrafts pure beeswax right on the same spot.

"Beeswax is mainly known for its cleanliness and the slow burning," Steve said.

Knorr's pure beeswax candles have burned in the White House since the Truman administration.

"We've done a lot of candles for the movie industry because they want large flames for the camera," Steve said.

Knorr's has sold candles to the Queen of England and shipped orders all the way to Dubai. Yearly they manufacture 400,000 pounds of beeswax candles, and they make them all the old-fashioned way.

The Knorr Candle Gift Shop is aglow this season with festive ideas for your holiday table and all the trimmings. This is a warm and welcoming place.

"We have a lot of Christmas mixed in. We still try to be a candle shop; you'll see a lot of glittery holiday candles in here," Steve said.

While the gift shop celebrates the season, out back Steve's Dad Henry fine-tunes the machines he handtooled over 50 years ago. The Knorr family continues to be very hands-on. They remain the keepers of the family flame.
