Lockdown lifted at Fay Elementary school after City Heights shooting

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A shooting in a City Heights neighborhood left one person wounded and prompted a lockdown at a nearby primary school this afternoon. The lockdown was lifted a short time later.

About a half-dozen gunshots rang out in the area of 52nd Street and Orange Avenue shortly before 2 p.m., according to San Diego police. Officers arrived to find a victim suffering from at least one bullet wound to the back, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.

Administrators at Fay Elementary School, just south of the intersection, directed teachers to keep all students locked indoors while police searched the area by ground and from the air.

Witnesses said two men who appeared to be in their early to mid-20s - one was riding a bicycle - fled the area following the shooting, according to Hassen.

The victim's condition was not immediately clear.
