$30M Camp Pendleton training facility completed

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday at Camp Pendleton to mark the completion of a $30 million overhaul of a training facility designed to replicate a village in Afghanistan.

The 120,000-square-foot addition to the Infantry Immersion Trainer is intended to give Marines realistic training scenarios before being deployed to Afghanistan.

The facility includes mud-covered concrete buildings that simulate the typical look of homes and villages in the war-torn country. It also has mock markets, mosques, schools and shops.

According to Camp Pendleton officials, the homes and villages are integrated with direct-fire training systems, virtual simulation screens and video recording instruments that a unit can use to critique exercises.
