RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Mourners have remembered a Riverside police officer who was shot to death while chasing a suspected truck thief as a hero, a soldier and a dedicated public servant.

Thousands attended Officer Ryan Bonaminio's funeral Tuesday. Police say the Army veteran who had returned to work on his hometown police force after tours in Germany and Iraq was likely shot with his own service weapon.

Earl Ellis Green has been charged with his murder.

On Tuesday, police from other cities worked in Riverside so the department could attend the service.

During the funeral, Chief Sergio Diaz urged officers to follow their fallen colleague's example and never forget his sacrifice.

Bonaminio's father has said his son was proud to wear his police uniform, which he methodically inspected for loose threads.
