Lookout's charge dropped in deadly San Diego Bay boat crash

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The Coast Guard has dismissed a dereliction-of-duty charge against the petty officer who served as lookout on a vessel that collided with a pleasure boat during a Christmas watercraft parade in San Diego Bay.

The collision killed an 8-year-old boy and seriously injured five people.

The Coast Guard said in a statement Wednesday that Capt. Stephen Metruck determined there was no evidence presented at a hearing showing Petty Officer Lavelle M. Teague was derelict in his duties as lookout.

The hearing was held Tuesday in Alameda.

Three other officers face a court-martial. The vessel's driver, Petty Officer 3rd Class Paul Ramos, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and negligent homicide in the Dec. 20 crash.
