Suspected thieves try to break into ATM at North County pub

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Several would-be thieves smashed in a window at a Carmel Mountain Ranch pub and used a power tool to attempt to get at the contents of an automated teller machine before becoming scared off early Thursday, police said.

The burglary alarm at Conway's Irish Pub at 11040 Rancho Carmel Drive sounded about 5:30 a.m., according to San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.

At about the same time officers arrived, the suspects apparently ran out the back of the business, Cali said.

It was not immediately clear whether the responding officers or a woman opening up a doughnut shop next door was responsible for scaring them off.

Prior to fleeing, the suspects had used some sort of a power tool to cut three sides of a square into the pub's ATM, Cali said, adding they apparently got scared off before they could complete the square.

Cali could not immediately confirm scanner reports that several dropped bottle of vodka, a trash bag containing mail of unknown origin and a possible getaway vehicle were found at the scene.
