16-year-old girl dies after being in hot tub

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An autopsy conducted today was inconclusive about the cause of death of a 16- year-old San Diego girl who died after getting out of a hot tub at a Tierrasanta apartment, authorities said.

The examination of Emily Palmeter was completed today, but it was not enough to determine the cause of her death, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Additional tests, including toxicology tests, have been ordered, but could take several weeks to produce results, the medical examiner's office said.

The victim was, according to her Facebook page, a junior at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, a magnet high school in Southeast San Diego. That school is not in session because of the Thanksgiving holiday next week, so plans to help Palmeter's classmates have not been made yet, said San Diego Unified School District spokeswoman Linda Zintz.

Palmeter had no life-threatening illnesses and there were no signs of trauma on Palmeter's body when she was found on the living room floor of an apartment in the 5100 block of Via Valarta shortly after 1:20 a.m. Saturday, said San Diego Police Lt. Kevin Rooney.

Palmeter and her 16-year-old female friend were visiting two men, ages 18 and 19, in one of the men's mother's apartment and were sitting in the complex's hot tub, when Palmeter left with one of the men to go to the apartment, Rooney said.

A few minutes later, the man returned and said Palmeter was in medical distress.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate the circumstances around Palmeter's death, said San Diego Police Sgt. Ramona Hastings. But police said there is no evidence of any foul play.

TIERRASANTA (CNS) - A 16-year-old girl who had just stepped out of a hot tub died from no apparent external cause in a man's Tierrasanta apartment today, and police are investigating her  death as a possible homicide.

Police were called at 1:22 a.m. when the girl was found lying in the living room of an apartment in the 5100 block of Via Valarta, said San Diego Police Lt. Kevin Rooney.

Paramedics attempted to revive her, but she died at 2:34 a.m., Rooney said.

The girl and her 16-year-old female friend were visiting two men, ages 18 and 19, at the apartment and were sitting in the complex's hot tub, when the girl left with one of the men to go to his apartment, Rooney said.

A few minutes later, the man returned to the tub and said the girl was in medical distress.

There were no signs of external trauma on the girl's body, but because she has no history of illness, the death is being investigated as a possible homicide, Rooney said.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Sunday to attempt to determine the cause of the girl's death.

Her name is being withheld until all of her family members are notified.
