Famous California Neighborhood Not Happy To Be On Camel Cigarette Ad

Posted: Updated:

A marketing campaign for Camel cigarettes is using the image of a famous San Francisco neighborhood, and the people who live there aren't happy about it.  The campaign that uses images of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood is being attacked as exploitive by San Francisco's City Attorney who says "what we think the responsible thing for RJ Reynolds to do is to stop the campaign and stop playing on the iconic images of the Haight's history in an effort to expand their marketing reach here to the young people in San Francisco."  One residents says  "I don't like the neighborhood being used to do it.  I'm a smoker myself, but it really goes against the grain it really does."

In 19-97 San Francisco ran the famous joe camel image out of town, after accusing the company of appealing to children.   Now the city is hoping to do the same thing again.
