Serial credit card thief targets locker rooms at local gyms

VISTA (CNS/News 8) - Law enforcement authorities sought the public's help Tuesday in identifying a thief who steals credit cards from gym lockers and uses them around San Diego County.

"He's going into the male locker rooms, either cutting the locks off the member's locker and stealing their wallet and credit cards," said Detective Debra Haverkost of the Vista Sheriff's Department.

The man cut off a lock on a locker at the 24-Hour Fitness on Sycamore Avenue in Vista Nov. 9 and stole a credit card that he used a shortly afterward to charge more than $400 at a nearby Target store, according to San Diego County Crime Stoppers.

The card was used the same night at a 7-Eleven store, sheriff's Deputy Adriana Uribe said.

The man also stole credit cards from lockers at LA Fitness gyms in Vista, San Marcos and the city of San Diego, she said.

Authorities say this same man has pulled off eight similar capers in the past few months, racking up more than $6,000 in fraudulent credit card charges and in one incident in September, the identity theft of one victim.

"(The victim's) ID was used back in the state of Virginia two days later, where a suspect went in to test-drive a bicycle and never came back," Haverkost said.@

Uribe described the crook as white, 40-60 years old and about 5 feet 10 inches, with a medium build and glasses.

Anyone with more information was asked to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
