New grant provides more cash to help deputies catch drunk drivers

Posted: Updated:

(SANTEE) A new grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety is providing the San Diego Sheriff's Department $400,000 to help crack down on drunk driving.

The 12-month grant will allow deputies to throw more resources behind spotting and arresting impaired drivers throughout the year.

"It allows us to do DUI saturation patrols, DUI checkpoints, warrant sweeps and sting operations," said Deputy Raymond Homan.

A federal traffic highway study has found that every 45 minutes, another person is killed by a drunk driver in the United States. In California alone, more than 950 persons were killed in alcohol-related crashes. Deputies are hoping that this grant will help make statistics like those obsolete.

Along with the Sheriff's Department's saturation patrols, CHP is also warning driver it is conducting maximum enforcement patrols throughout this holiday weekend.
