Duplex fire displaces East County family

SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - An East County duplex fire Monday left a family of four temporarily homeless.

The non-injury blaze on Bernis Court in Spring Valley erupted about 10:45 a.m., said Leonard Villarreal, a spokesman for San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District.

A resident of the duplex smelled smoke and found her bed on fire, Villarreal said. She and four other occupants were able to escape safely, along with a pet dog.

About two dozen firefighters from three agencies got the flames under control within 20 minutes.

Investigators worked through the afternoon to determine the cause of the blaze and the extent of monetary losses it caused. There was no damage to the adjoining unit, which was unoccupied at the time of the fire, according to Villarreal.

The American Red Cross will help the displaced family arrange for interim lodging, the spokesman said.

The mother of two who first noticed the blaze told authorities she never heard a smoke detector go off inside the residence.
