Poway man who threatened deputies with crossbow sentenced to probation

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Poway man who held deputies at bay with box cutters and a crossbow after getting into a loud argument with his elderly mother was sentenced Tuesday to probation for mentally ill offenders and ordered transferred to a board-and-care facility.

Stephen Edward Gainder, 45, pleaded guilty last month to resisting a peace officer and admitted using a deadly weapon.

At Gainder's arraignment, prosecutor Elizabeth Porterfield told Judge David Szumowski that neighbors contacted the sheriff's department about 10 a.m. on Sept. 14.

When deputies arrived at the home in the 14100 block of Tobiasson Road, an agitated Gainder came out to the driveway and threatened the officers with a box cutter, Porterfield said.

Gainder later came out of the home with a crossbow and pointed its arrows at deputies, the prosecutor said.

Deputies were able to get Gainder's wheelchair-using mother out of the house safely, but the defendant holed up in the residence for nearly four hours and was finally arrested when he went outside again.

Nobody was injured and the reason for the domestic dispute was unclear, authorities said.

The defendant has a prior conviction for assaulting a deputy about a decade ago, Porterfield tld the judge.
