ATM thieves attempt to strike again for 2nd time this week

By News 8's Doug Kolk

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Digital surveillance video outside a Scripps Ranch Cabrillo Credit Union may have captured the suspects in action, attempting to steal its ATM early Thursday morning.

According to a spokesman for the Credit Union, two cameras were rolling at the time. One pointing directly at the ATM.

It is the 2nd time this week thieves attempted to steal an ATM.

Around 3:29 Thursday morning, San Diego Police officers say, in attempt to knock it off its foundation, two suspects backed a stolen U-Hall truck into an outdoor ATM Kiosk in front of the Cabrillo Credit Union located in the 10,000 block of Carroll Canyon Road.

Police say the U-Haul got lodged in the ATM and the suspects took off on foot. Police K-9 units scoured the perimeter of the building searching for the suspects.

Officers also tell News 8, one of the suspects injured himself during the attempt and left blood at the scene. Samples are being collected for possible DNA identification.

Just Monday, thieves tried to knock off an ATM at the University and State Employees Credit Union at 8889 Rio San Diego Drive in the Mission Valley section of San Diego.

It's unclear whether the two incidents are related to each other or a string of ATM thefts around the county this year.
