SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - A 72-year-old motorist and three Mount Miguel High School students were injured Thursday afternoon when the man's truck veered off a road near the East County campus and hit the youths as they were walking home, authorities said.

John Reyes of Lemon Grove lost control of his northbound 2008 Chevrolet Silverado shortly before 3 p.m. on Sweetwater Road, just south of Blossom Lane, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The pickup went over a concrete curb and crashed through a power post, breaking it in half, before striking the teenage girl and two boys, CHP public affairs Officer Brian Pennings said.

Medics airlifted the most seriously injured student, who had suffered at least one broken bone, to a trauma center. Ground ambulances took Reyes and the two other teens to hospitals for treatment of less severe injuries, Pennings said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
