Eccentric International Chefs: Old world recipes revived

SANTEE (CBS 8) - If you're looking for a recommendation at Eccentric International Chefs, just step inside the front door.

"Everything is yummy here. There's nothing bad here," Carl Zeitsen said.

Carl and his wife Melinda have been getting rave reviews since they brought their old world European delights to Santee seven years ago.

"My grandfather started, my father took over and then I took over there in Switzerland, then I started to go around the world and work for different companies," Carl said.

Along the way, Carl became baker to the stars, catering to some of the biggest names in Hollywood before settling into a cozy shop on Carlton Hills Boulevard.

"It's about time we have our own business, huh? Definitely," Carl said.

Here they revive their traditional family recipes.

"We make the pannetone, classic European-style. It's like an Italian fruitcake. Then we do the German stolen. This is really famous, European fruitcake," he said.

Customers are wowed by their wedding cakes.

"We match the color, people, how many people they have… buttercream, whipped cream. We design it, do everything for them," Carl said.

Eccentric International Chefs has been cited by the California State Assembly for its exemplary public service during the 2001 wildfires, and in 2010 was named small business of the year.

"We love the customers, we love the business. We love the action, you know?" Carl said.

And the community loves them.

"I highly recommend it. It's the best bakery in town," a customer said.

Traditional recipes and old world flavors are the tastes that Santee savors.
