Old military shell forces road closures in Tierrasanta

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The discovery of an old military shell on the grounds of a San Diego Gas & Electric substation in Tierrasanta prompted some nearby residential evacuations and a three-hour road closure Wednesday while a bomb squad detonated the device.

A contractor crew unearthed the unexploded ordnance shortly before 8:30 a.m. while digging a trench at the SDG&E facility in the 10500 block of Tierrasanta Boulevard, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

City emergency crews cleared people out of seven surrounding homes, shut down the roadway in the area and called in a military explosives team, which destroyed the shell by detonating it shortly after 11:30 a.m., SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

The Tierrasanta district was developed on the grounds of a World War II-era Marine Corps training base called Camp Elliott.

Over the five decades since the installation closed, residents have periodically come across errant military ordnance, including a shell that exploded and killed two 8-year-old boys playing in a canyon in the area in 1983.
