Baby sperm whale beached on Torrey Pines

LA JOLLA (CBS 8) - SeaWorld representatives believe it was a baby sperm whale that beached itself around 9:30 p .m. Sunday.

"There is no telling how old it is or its species until further tests are conducted," said one crew member.

If it is a baby sperm whale, it will be the first time SeaWorld Curator of Mammals, Keith Yip has seen one in San Diego in 25 years.

Yip estimates the whales size at around 18 feet long and 3000 pounds.  He says a crew of 20, including veterinarians tended to the whale.  It received antibiotic injections and medical attention for minor lacerations to its side.

SeaWorld crews brought the whale about 1/4 mile out to sea.

"The whale may have beached itself because of being lost or sick," one veterinarian said.
