Broken fire hydrant shoots massive water stream

Posted: Updated:

Loma Portal-  A broken fire hydrant shooting off a 75 foot high stream of water flooded the heavily traveled intersection of Midway Dr. and Rosecrans Blvd. Tuesday morning.

Around 3am, officers say a tractor trailer clipped the fire hydrant, knocking it over.

For three hours water forcefully spewed as crews had difficulty accessing the shut-off valve.

One to two feet of water covered the eastern portion of Midway Dr.  The Casual Male XL store, located only feet from the hydrant, took the brunt of the force.  Its unclear if the water infiltrated the store.

A specialist from the City of San Diego Water Dept. was called in to turn off the valve.  It was shut off around 6:30am.
