Brutal Old Town robbery caught on tape

SAN DIEGO, Calif, (CBS 8) - San Diego police are looking for two men who robbed a market in Old Town using handguns. News 8 obtained surveillance video of the brutal attack.

The armed robbery in the 2200 block of San Diego Avenue occurred about 7:30 p.m. Monday, according to San Diego police.

During the robbery, one of the gunmen pistol-whipped the store owner, who asked not to be identified. The victim was not hospitalized and is now recovering from head injuries.

Police described the first gunman as black and about 6 feet 2 inches tall, with a thin build. The other was described as black and about 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a heavy build.

They fled the store on foot and no vehicle description was given.

On the surveillance video, one gunman wearing a gray sweatshirt is seen going straight for the cash register; while his accomplice, dressed in black, makes sure the store is clear of customers.

The gunman in the gray sweatshirt apparently pistol-whips the owner off camera.  Right after, the owner can be seen stumbling and falling to the floor in the rear of the store.

Both men then robbed the victim of his jewelry as he lay injured and bleeding on the floor.

The gunmen had their faces covered by bandanas and both should be considered armed and dangerous.

"Anyone who uses a weapon in the course of a crime is capable of using it," Detective Gary Hassen of the SDPD media relations unit told News 8. "It's unfortunate the clerk got beat up, but the clerk could have been shot and we certainly don't want that to happen," Hassen said.

The crooks stole about $2,000 from the cash register.

"The San Diego police department is asking the public if anybody saw or heard anything, call Crime Stoppers," Detective Hassen said. "You can remain anonymous and get up to a $1,000 reward."

The San Diego Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line is (888) 580-8477.
