SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Padres players and management began their 2010 Holiday Caravan on Wednesday by helping around 600 military families select gifts for children.
Padres employees donated $3,000 to the Armed Services YMCA's 24th annual Super Parent Shopping Day.
Team owner Jeff Moorad, manager Bud Black, pitcher Mat Latos and outfielder Will Venable were among the Padres who helped parents do their shopping.
The YMCA's Brittany Catton said more than 2,200 military families have signed up for holiday assistance. Last year, the organization was able to provide two new toys to more than 1,800 children of enlisted personnel.
They originally planned to help 400 families in the parent shopping event, but enough gifts came in to take care of more, Catton said.
Families on a waiting list will be invited to shop on Dec. 16.
The Padres also plan to visit wounded armed forces members at the Balboa Naval Hospital.
