South Park hails Progress

SOUTH PARK (CBS 8) - For those seeking shelter from the storm in South Park, it's hard to find a more comfy and cozy, warm and inviting place than Progress.

"We've got gifts, we've got furniture, we've got something for everyone," Christy Jayner of Progress said.

What Christy and her husband Bruce really got is the support of the neighborhood, which has fallen in love with Progress.

"South Park has been a dream neighborhood for us. Everyone has been incredibly supportive," Christy said.

Located in the 2200 block of 30th Street, the Jayners have set up shop in a piece of San Diego history.

"The good thing about this building, it was recently renovated -- it was the Burlingame Garage, built in the 1920s," Bruce Jayner said.

A warning to anyone who sets foot inside Progress -- it's going to cost you, because much of their merchandise is irresistible. Luckily, it's also affordable.

"I always have to show off the rugs from Afghanistan. These are hand-felted, it's totally a homegrown process and from a fair trade compensation, so the families are being paid a fair wage.

"One of my favorite things is our eco-coasters. They are made from fallen branches, so no tree was harmed in the making of these coasters. These scarves are made from recycled cashmere sweaters. It's our most popular Christmas gift.

"We've a little kids' area that we've packed in with some really great gifts. We have some organic onesies. My favorite is the teddy bear on roller skates," Kristy said.

Opened just four months ago, this mom and pop shop is filled with can't-resist gifts and can-do attitude.

"Why not take a risk? Why wait for something else to happen. We decided we'd go out there and make it happen on our own,"Bruce said.

And that's what's called making Progress.
