Christmas tree recycling in San Diego

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego Monday officially kicked off its 37th annual tree recycling program, in which residents can leave Christmas trees for curbside pickup or take them to 16 locations.

"This is a great program for everyone," City Councilwoman Marti Emerald said. "Easy recycling for residents, we keep greenery out of the landfill -- extending its life -- and recycle the trees to provide free mulch for your yard."

Emerald said recycling trees and other yard waste saves 20 percent of landfill space annually.

The trees will be transported to The Greenery at the Miramar Landfill and converted into mulch and compost that residents can take for landscaping use.

Residents are asked to drop off their trees during daylight hours and make sure lights and ornaments have been removed. Artificial trees are not accepted.

The program runs through Jan. 23.
