Local couple ties the knot on 1-1-11

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The first day of this New Year brought with it a pretty cool date. You've probably already thought about this, but when you convert January 1, 2011 into numbers you get 1-1-11, a popular date to get married.

One wedding in La Jolla was picture perfect -- a stunning backdrop, beautiful weather and truly a date to remember. Childhood friends Tiffany Torgan and Bill Philips set the special date about six months ago.

"It's a day long in the making but one well worth the wait," Bill said.

"It was a Saturday, which worked out good and it was a holiday, so we just thought it would be a really great day to have it," Tiffany said.

"Bill will never forget. He'll never have to work hopefully on Jan. 1, they'll always be able to spend it together," a guest said.

1-1-11 brings a lot of symbolism with it.

"Theoretically it's supposed to be good luck because you have all those aces," a guest said.

And then there's the coolness factor.

"How many people can say they were married on a day that had all ones in it? That's kind of cool," photographer John Riedy said.

Riedy knows dates are important to couples.

"I think I shot 7-7-07. That was a big one," he said.

The groom's father says the date's not the most important thing.

"I think that when you're ready to get married, you love someone and I don't think what date it is makes any difference," he said.

But 1-1-11 does bring with it something extra special.

"1-1, a new year, a new beginning , a new life," a guest said.

It's a clean slate that they can celebrate with the start of each new year.

"And I can wish her both a happy New Year and a happy anniversary all at the same time. Hopefully I get a kiss for both," Bill said.

For couples who perhaps got engaged over the holidays, there's still time this year to choose some other memorable dates, like 9-10-11 and 11-11-11.
