SOLANA BEACH (CNS) - Solana Beach Mayor Lesa Heebner said Tuesday she plans to meet with a state senator on Friday in an effort to prevent the city of Del Mar from gaining sole ownership of the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Heebner said she wants Solana Beach to co-own the fairgrounds along with other agencies that will govern the facility upon its sale.
Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, introduced legislation last month that would clear the way to sell the fairgrounds to the city of Del Mar. The facility would be governed by the cities of Del Mar, Solana Beach and San Diego, the county of San Diego and the San Dieguito River Conservancy.
Heeber said Del Mar's sole ownership is the only part of the plan she objects to. She noted that appointments to the governing board would need to be approved by the Del Mar City Council.
"We agree on 95 percent of everything, it's just that last little bit (that's a problem)," Heebner said.
Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger first proposed the sale of the fairgrounds and other large state properties to help reduce the state's budget deficit.
The sale, as proposed by Kehoe, would be funded by a bond, to be repaid with future revenues generated by the fairgrounds. A group of horse owners has also promised to chip in, so improvements could be made to racing facilities.
The fate of Kehoe's measure in the Legislature is unclear.
Heebner said her understanding is that Gov. Jerry Brown, who succeeded Schwarzenegger on Monday, does not view the sale of state property as being a high priority, since it would hardly make a dent in the state deficit. On the other hand, Brown appears to support the basic concept of local control, she said.
