MIRAMAR LAKE (CBS 8) - It's been about three weeks since a record-breaking blue catfish was caught in Miramar Lake, but on Monday a fisherman was actually casting for trout when he hooked another monster weighing nearly 50 pounds.

A Ramona man is enjoying one whopper of a fish tale he'll be sharing with his grand kids. It's a Miramar Lake record forty nine pound blue catfish. Theory is the strong winter rain and run-off is stirring the big boys up off the bottom.

Monday was Greg Pshsnychniak's day off from work and he said most lakes in the county were closed so for the first time in his long fishing career he went to Miramar Lake.

Six hours into a tough, wet and windy fishing day his luck changed.

"That is my story and I'm sticking to it," chuckled Pshsnychniak. "How many times you catch a fish and end up on the news?"

Greg was fishing on an inner tube and thought he snagged the bottom. "So this thing just drags me and there are people walking around I'm like, 'Look at me I've got a fish', and they just said oh this guy is nuts". Greg said he felt like he was waterskiiing. "This fish takes me all the way to the dock I just go backward the rod is bent he's dragging me all the way to the dam and I'm thinking what am I going to do with this?"

Greg thought about cutting the line but one hour later he finally hauled in the fish. "I see it, it's got eyes like Rodney Dangerfield. This thing is so big I'm like it's going to eat me." Greg said they weighed his whopper in a hurry not out of fear but friendship.

"Pictures are kind of shaky in the paper because we wanted to get that fish back in the water. We wanted to release him," said Pshsnychniak.

Greg says that catfish didn't eat him for dinner so he returned the favor.

"He's 40 years old. I can't kill a brother. A 40-year-old fish? He is as old as me -- I just don't have the heart to do it. So he's there for someone else to catch," he said.

For all of you fishermen out there, Greg caught the fish with 12-pound test and a quarter-ounce lure. The biggest catfish ever caught in the county was at San Vicente Reservoir in 2008. That Blue Catfish was 113 pounds.
