SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man and woman were in custody Thursday, accused of leading police on a brief high-speed car chase that ended with the couple's vehicle knocking over a fire hydrant in University Heights, sending water shooting about 100 feet into the air, police said.

The chase began over an alleged traffic violation just before 10 p.m. Wednesday in the Hillcrest area, according to San Diego police Sgt. JJ Salinas.

It ended when the man, who was driving, lost control around a curve and struck the fire hydrant at Florida Street and El Cajon Boulevard in University Heights, the sergeant said.

The woman, a passenger, was arrested immediately following the crash, while the man fled on foot, he said, adding that the man was quickly caught nearby with the help of a police dog.

The man was taken to an area hospital for an injury from the dog, Salinas said.

The names of the man and woman arrested were not immediately released.
