Surveillance video offers new clues in dealership thefts

SAN DIEGO (CNS/News 8) - New surveillance video may offer clues in the theft of several vehicles from a local auto dealership.

A representative from Ken Grody Ford called police around 7:10 p.m. Thursday to report that three new Ford F-150 pickup trucks were stolen from the dealer's lot at 5555 Paseo Del Norte, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.

"As we watched the video, it's ridiculous," said Jason Noble, general sales manager for Ken Grody Ford, who released to News 8 surveillance video documenting two of the thefts.

A closer look at hours of surveillance video shows what appears to be members of a ring of thieves carefully casing the dealership.

"We're seeing them walk on and off our lot throughout the day," said Noble. "Every time a salesman tried to approach them, they'd be on their cell phone and walk off the lot."

A dark-colored "Eddie Bauer" four-door Explorer may have been used as a spotter vehicle to drop off and pick up members of the ring throughout the day.

Dealership employees discovered the theft a short time earlier while doing inventory, police said, adding that both the trucks and the keys for the trucks were missing.

Ken Grody Ford is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone offering information leading to a conviction in these thefts.

Anyone with information regarding the theft was asked to call Carlsbad police at (760) 931-2197.
