San Diego County authorities keeping close tabs on over 2,000 sex offenders

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than twice as many registered sex offenders in San Diego County were checked up on by law enforcement last year than in 2009, officials said Friday.

Last year, 2,062 sex offenders were contacted through so-called audits, up from 960 in 2009, according to the San Diego Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force.

According to SAFE, the audits are an essential part of public safety because they confirm the location of known sexual offenders for law enforcement and the community.

"Even more important, audits tell us when someone is in violation of registration laws or engaging in other criminal activity," said Commander David Collazo of the SAFE Task Force.

SAFE includes all 16 law enforcement agencies in San Diego County. Six of the largest agencies have dedicated personnel on the task force who work together to stop sexual offenders from committing more crimes, officials said.
