Family of Chelsea King won't sue state

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The parents of a girl who was raped and killed in San Diego by a registered child sex offender say they will not sue the state of California for damages.

Brent King said Friday that a lawsuit would force his family to focus on tragedy and pain that followed the death of 17-year-old Chelsea King last March.

John Gardner was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in May for murdering Chelsea and 14-year-old Amber Dubois.

The 31-year-old Gardner repeatedly violated parole after serving time in prison for molesting a 13-year-old neighbor in 2000. Those violations included being within 100 yards of places where children gather.
