NATIONAL CITY (CNS) - A 23-year-old woman was killed and three other people were severely injured Monday in a fiery solo car crash on a South Bay freeway interchange.

The accident occurred shortly after 2 a.m., when the speeding driver of a 2000 Honda Civic lost control while trying to merge from westbound State Route 54 ramp onto northbound Interstate 805, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The vehicle plummeted off the connector, struck a large eucalyptus tree, careened into a culvert and caught fire.

CHP officers arrived a short time later and put out the flames, and emergency crews extricated the occupants of the vehicle. One of the passengers, Elsa Rostro Rodriguez of San Diego, died at the scene, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office. Medics took three others to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The car reportedly had been traveling at excessive speeds and swerving back and forth just prior to the wreck.
