Woman pleads not guilty to killing 48-year-old son

EL CAJON (CNS) - An East County woman accused of fatally shooting her 48-year-old son in a house in Rancho San Diego last month pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge of premeditated murder.

Josephine Mary Ring, 66, was ordered held without bail in the Dec. 19 killing of Vincent John Bonfiglio.

Ring, who also faces a sentence-enhancing gun-use allegation, faces a maximum of 50 years to life behind bars if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Samantha Begovich.

The defendant was arrested last Thursday morning at a health care facility in La Mesa, where she has been under a doctor's care since her son's death, according to San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Dennis Brugos.

Ring called 911 shortly after 11 p.m. Dec. 19 and said she had shot her son in the 2200 block of Tina Street, Brugos said.

Deputies arrived at the home and found the victim on the floor, Brugos said, adding that paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Bonfiglio, a one-time car salesman who was on disability, had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

The gun used in the killing was a .357-caliber Magnum, Begovich said.

Ring was detained the night of the shooting but not immediately arrested because authorities were uncertain whether the shooting was an accident, in self-defense or a criminal act. "Since that time, evidence has come to light, which warranted the arrest of Ring, charging her with one count of murder," Brugos said.

Neither the lieutenant nor the prosecutor would elaborate on the new evidence.

El Cajon Superior Court Judge Charles Ervin scheduled a readiness conference for Jan. 21 and a preliminary hearing for Jan, 24.
