Creating a new research center for climate science

Posted: Updated:

LA JOLLA (CNS) - The Scripps Institution of Oceanography announced Wednesday it will partner with a private firm to deploy a $25 million global greenhouse gas observation network over the next five years.

The network will provide scientists with detailed information about carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere.

Earth Networks, the partner company based in Germantown, Md., will form the Earth Networks Center for Climate Research at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

The firm plans to install 50 observation stations in the United States, followed by more in Europe and then in other areas of the world. There are currently only a few dozen such stations in existence, according to Scripps.

The detailed information is expected to make it possible to quantify and map localized greenhouse gas emissions and how they change over time.

"For the past 53 years, Scripps scientists have examined the atmosphere, and the new data from Earth Networks will empower the scientific community with a better understanding of this very complicated picture," said Tony Haymet, director of Scripps Oceanography.

"This network is going to measure the most important greenhouse gases, which are sometimes created as the result of industrial activities," he said. "We'll be able to comprehend a regional level that has not previously been examined."

Earth Networks already has a climate monitoring network for its Weather Bug computer applications.
