Getting back to the garden

Posted: Updated:

LA JOLLA (CBS 8) - If you're feeling up to it, the staff of Scripps Memorial La Jolla would like to invite you to come up to the hospital. Not to check in, but rather to check out their sculpture garden.

"We have 43 acres here at Scripps La Jolla and we have sculptures all over the campus. You could literally walk or stroll around the grounds and see a beautiful sculpture around every corner," manager of volunteer services Susan Vandedriesse said.

The garden and surrounding park are not only here to soothe the sick and provide a peaceful place for families or respite from stress for the staff. They are here for all of us.

"We give tours of the garden, which is an event anyone in the community can come and take part in," docent Joyce Doyle said.

The Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla tours can be self-guided with a map or lead by a knowledgeable volunteer docent like Joyce Hyde.

"I feel that this is actually a destination for things other than coming to a hospital. The sculptures we have here are unique and beautiful and appeal to a lot of people," Joyce said.

You'll see 31 pieces on the tour.

"And when you learn a little bit about the artist you appreciate the art more too, and that's what I try to convey to the people,"

"I don't know of any other hospital campus that really compares to this. It's just beautiful. It's a pleasure for me to do this,"

Finding pleasure in a place of pain, the sculpture garden sustains the spirit, nurtures the soul and promotes the power of healing in all who encounter its hidden charms.
