Reaction from both sides to Obama's speech

Posted: Updated:

(CBS 8) - Reaction is pouring in one day after President Obama addressed the nation at a memorial in Tucson.

The event was filled with applause, loud cheering and even whistles. While some say that helped in the grieving process, others are criticizing the president, his response, and even the venue.

A day after speaking at a memorial service for the Tucson shooting victims, President Obama is being called "Consoler in Chief", but others are calling the atmosphere at the event inappropriate for the occasion.

From Facebook to Twitter to online polls, the nation is weighing in on the pep rally-like tone of the event. Many are calling it embarrassing, and believe the service failed to effectively honor the memory of those affected by the tragic event.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fielded questions about the emotional outbursts Thursday, and believes the raw display is all part of the healing process.

"I think part of the grieving process is celebrating the lives of those that were lost, and celebrating the miracles of those that survived," Gibbs said.

Gibbs also said many of the speech's themes would carry over into the President's State of the Union speech Jan. 25.

"Obviously, elements of what you heard last night and improvements in our civil discourse and how we debate issues will certainly play a role in this year's State of the Union," Gibbs said.
