Bay Park Elementary School hosts a snow day

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Just when you thought the holidays were over, 500 elementary school students received the gift they've been waiting for all year long. It may be January and eighty degrees in parts of San Diego, but 17 tons of snow fell upon Bay Park Elementary.

Instead of throwing a party, the school's PTA paid $4,000 to haul in the frigid fun. It's a reward for the students' hard work. The school's principal Elizabeth Ballard says as long as test scores continue to rise the snow will continue to fall, "Academics are critical and that is our main focus but having fun is also important and we want to make memories that children will remember for the rest of their lives."

It was a frigid day at Bay Park Elementary but their test scores continue to be red hot with an API in the high 800's. This was the school's second annual "Snow Day".  Local businesses chipped in to help pay for all of the fun.
