MLK festivities to kick off this weekend

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The 31st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, one of several events honoring the slain civil rights leader, will start off in the East Village this morning.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. at 13th and Imperial avenues.

At the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade across from the San Diego Convention Center, a celebration of King's life and legacy is set to start at 11 a.m. As many as 20,000 people have attended the event in years past.

In Skyline, a daylong festival that pays tribute to King starts at 8 a.m. at MiraCosta College, the 2011 City of Oceanside-Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award will be presented at 4 p.m.

The holiday is observed on Monday, when most government offices will be closed.
