The Aztecs' leading man

The Aztecs' leading man

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego State Basketball Coach Steve Fisher has always known how important his point guard D.J. Gay is to the success of his basketball team. Before the season began there was only one voter and Coach Fisher cast his making Gay his team captain.  Time and time again Fisher has stated publicly that Gay is not his best player but without question, he is the Aztecs' most important player.  The way the senior point guard has emerged this season, Fisher is reconsidering that assessment.

"I somewhat qualified it, probably making him mad, saying he's not our best player but he's our most important player," Fisher said. "He's inching up to not only be our most important player but our best player. He was fantastic. He plays with no fear, no agenda."

Once considered the glue that cemented together the other four returning starters on the 6th ranked team in the nation, Gay is now a scoring force as well.  He's second only to sophomore Kawhi Leonard in scoring with a 22.4 ppg average.  And he's been deadly for downtown. This season, Gay has attempted 107 3-point shots and converted over 40 percent of the time.

In the midst of a 19-0 record-shattering season, doubters wonder how far this team can go in a post-season that will certainly include a ticket to the NCAA Tournament. There is little doubt in the minds of players, like Leonard, that with Gay running the show, there are no limitations.

"Yeah. We just feel very confident as team. We're jelling as each game goes. We're just getting better and better. We feel like we can play with anybody if we come out and play our hardest," said Leonard.
