San Diego Zoo's newest giraffe makes debut at Safari Park

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A male giraffe born the day before Christmas was put on display Wednesday at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

Jioni, which means "eve" in Swahili, was pushed into the the East Africa exhibit by his mother and quickly surrounded by the rest of the herd - with each sniffing him in welcome.

The facility formerly known as the Wild Animal Park has five male and 11 female Uganda giraffes, of which fewer than 670 remain in the wild. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has declared it an endangered subspecies.

Jioni is the smallest and fairest in the herd.

Other young giraffes at the park include Jarani, born last August, and Machaleo, who arrived in September.
