Carlsbad school shooting workers among others to be honored in annual 'Salute to Local Heroes' luncheon

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three construction workers who tackled a school shooter and a grandmother killed while protecting her granddaughter from a kidnapper were among six people slated to be honored Thursday in San Diego County.

Thursday's 20th Annual Law Enforcement Salute to Local Heroes is about recognizing average citizens who perform courageous deeds, according to event sponsor, the Rotary Club of San Diego.

Awards will be presented by San Diego County Sheriff's William Gore, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne, during at a luncheon at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina.

Honorees are:

- Construction workers Steven Kane, Carlos Partida and Mario Contreras for stopping a gunman during a shooting rampage at an elementary school in Carlsbad;

- Rachel Turner, the teenage daughter of a sheriff's detective who helped in the investigation and conviction of the rapist of a 5-year-old girl;

- Sharrel Blankenbaker, who was killed by a gunman in Texas attempting to kidnap Blankenbaker's granddaughter, Cassidy, a Ramona resident, while she was vacationing with her grandparents;

- SDG&E lineman Daryl Hollins for witnessing a burglary and calling 911.
