SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Federal investigators probing the cause of a deadly pipeline explosion in Northern California have found multiple defects and cracks in welds that held together segments of the pipe.

The National Transportation Safety Board on Friday released its report detailing the flaws along the pipeline that ruptured Sept. 9.

The blast killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes.

Engineering experts told The Associated Press the report shows welds on segment of pipe that failed had cracks and other flaws that could have broken under increased pressure in the line.

The pipeline's owner, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. had spiked pressure prior to the blast.

The NTSB says it has not yet finished its inquiry and did not yet know the cause of the blast.

PG&E said it could not immediately comment.
