Balboa International Market: Feasting on flatbreads

Posted: Updated:

CLAIREMONT (CBS 8) - A bouquet of aromas from around the world wafts through the aisles of Balboa International Market.

"There's some stuff that's from the Middle East, Russian products, Polish products… our tomato paste, for example, it's all imported from different countries, from Turkey, from Iran, from Syria, Lebanon," manager Elie Raad said.

Elie has stacked his shelves with staples from every corner of the globe.

"This whole aisle is tea, and there's also from different places in the world, different flavors. You name it, we have it in the teas," Elie said.

Whether it's Middle Eastern, Persian or Eastern European, whether it's packaged, canned or precooked on a skewer, sliced or butchered, you'll find it at Balboa International Market. They also have a newly opened bakery section, where flatbreads are cooked traditionally.

"This is a custom-made oven. The bread would bake, then the bread comes out of it and it is baked on stone," Elie said.

And customers are grabbing it up right out of the oven.

"It's very light and it's good to eat warm," Elie said.

With kabobs on the barby and flatbreads on the bricks and fava beans by the bundle, Balboa International Market is ready for the world.
