SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man suspected of robbing a Kearny Mesa bank Tuesday led authorities on a brief road chase that ended with his arrest alongside a South Bay freeway.

A thief in a black leather jacket demanded cash from a teller at the Wells Fargo branch office in the 9300 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard shortly before 9:30 a.m., according to San Diego police. He fled with an undisclosed amount of cash to the south in a white sport utility vehicle.

About 15 minutes later, officers caught up with the SUV in southeastern San Diego. The suspect refused to yield and fled to the west on State Route 94, then south on Interstate 805.

Near East H Street in Chula Vista, the suspect ran over a tire-flattening spike strip laid in his path by California Highway Patrol personnel, the CHP reported. Moments later, he pulled over onto the shoulder, got out of the disabled vehicle and ran off.

Police arrested him nearby with help from a service dog. Officers closed the southbound lanes of the freeway briefly while the man was taken into custody, according to the Highway Patrol.

The suspect's name was not immediately available.
